Our goal is to create a precise mechanism for detecting colorectal cancer (CRC). We propose the use of a genetically modified probiotic that will express pigments. In the colon, it will detect CRC by antigen overexpression, leading to the activation of a genetic kill switch, causing bacterial cell death and releasing the pigments into the colon. Feces containing these pigments can be analyzed, resulting in a more precise CRC detection method.
Watch video This year, Arkansas State University - Campus Querétaro - will participate in the 24th edition of the Verano de la Ciencia de la Región Centro for the first time. Undergraduate students, Alfredo Mendoza Mendoza from Universidad Politécnica de San Luis Potosí, and Kenya Villanueva García from Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya, will be visiting us to work on projects. At the same time, ASUCQ undergraduate students Javier Aguirre González and Natalia Estrada Hernández will be visiting Universidad Politécnica de Querétaro and Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, respectively. In addition, undergraduate students Edna Arciga Contreras, Miren Ugarte Maldonado, Diego Aznar Cruz, Pablo Torres Campos, and Ximena Zamora Prieto will work on internal projects with ASUCQ professors. In 2021 a new format of the competition was launched: iGEM Design League, specifically aimed at Latin America. This year, Arkansas State University - Campus Querétaro - has entered the iGEM Design League competition for the first time. Our team consists of recently-graduated alumni and undergraduate students. The competition kick-off took place on June 25th and will end by late November / early December. Congratulations to our alumni Ximena Vargas, Wendy Mandujano, Isaac Augusto Reyes, and Luisa Fernanda González who participated in the "SOMIXXXV y 1er Simposio Nacional de Biosensores" with the project: Biosíntesis de nanopartículas de plata (AgNPs) y su uso potencial como alternativa a métodos convencionales de síntesis. The project was supervised by MSc. Bárbara González and Dr. Fermando Belmont.
Congratulations to our recently graduated alumni Ximena Vargas-Estrada, Sofía Alfaro-Cortés, and Sebastián Carrillo-Aguilar. Their project, lead by Dr. Bernardo Pérez, has been accepted to be presented at the 13th Annual Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium held at Rice University. This event is open to undergraduate students from all around the World.
In particular, Ximena Vargas will give the talk: "Ribosome dissociation observed during Minigene expression in E. coli might be related to translation speed and ribosome stalling during general gene translation", in the BioSciencesBCB section of the symposium. Congratulations to our students Ximena Vargas, Fernanda González, Wendy Mandujano, and Isaac Sánchez. Their work: “Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their potential use as an alternative to conventional synthesis methods” has been accepted for presentation at the SOMI XXXV Instrumentation Conference (SOMI XXXV Congreso de Instrumentación).
Also, a big round of virtual applause is in order for the faculty involved: Prof Bárbara González (who served as PI in this project) and Dr. Fernando Belmont. Congratulations to our student Ximena Vargas-Estrada, who has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue her graduate studies. Ximena graduated in summer with a BS in Biotechnology.
