THRIVE - GENERAL INFORMATION
What is Thrive?
Thrive is a student-led movement that provides free-of-charge support to students in their preparation for education beyond a bachelor's degree. We focus on motivating students to pursue graduate studies by making them aware of different opportunities such as scholarships, internships, and research. We also aim to help them strengthen their curriculum and guide them to make their application processes more successful by providing advice and tutoring.
Our main targets are students interested in the pursuit of master’s and doctorate STEM programs, or healthcare professional studies, at both, national and international levels.

GRE: The Exam a lot of Graduate Schools in the U.S. will Ask You For
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that contains three general sections. Many graduate schools and scholarships in the United states require a minimum score to consider your application. For other schools and programs, presenting the test scores is optional but a good addition to your application. It is also worth mentioning that taking this test is required to apply for the Fulbright-García Robles Scholarship.
In Querétaro, there is an official testing center at Prol. Tecnológico Norte 1010, Int. 20, Balcón Campestre, Plaza Marina, and another one in Mexico City at Londres No. 47-201, Col Juarez. For more locations click here.

Summer Research Programs
A good addition to any graduate school application in the STEM field is research experience. This becomes almost vital if you are applying to research-based graduate programs. We know that it might be difficult to handle school obligations and research at the same time or that research opportunities might just not be available to you. That is why intensive summer research programs are a great way to add some research to your resume.
- Look for opportunities at Mexican research centers such as UNAM Juriquilla, UNAM in Mexico City, IPN, CINVESTAV, etc. On the websites of these institutions, look for scientists that are doing research you are interested in, read more about their work, and contact them to ask for a summer opportunity at their labs.
- Look at the following programs that accept Mexicans if you are interested in research in the U.S. or other countries. Note that these programs are usually extremely competitive.
- Cold Spring Harbor URP
- Amgen Scholars Asia - Rockefeller University SURF - Pathways to science (search for international student option) - Verano de la Ciencia |
Additional recommendations
Graduate schools encourage students to partake in activities that test practical and project-oriented skills. Forming part of subject-relevant clubs, having additional projects, applying for patents and internships, or any other proof of skill is highly recommended.
Additionally, consider contacting professors with interests similar to yours. This is to gain further insight and create stronger connections with the people in charge of passing your application. NOTE: Keep these interactions strictly professional and with the intent of information gathering. Try to direct the conversation to understand how well your interests and skill sets match their project.
Finally, make sure to create a LinkedIn profile and maintain it up to date. Show your professional interests and make connections with people working in the field you are interested in. Networking is an essential part of finding great graduate school opportunities.
